Vaikom is a suburban area located towards the northwest of Kottayam in Kerala. It is the capital of the Vaikom Taluk. Its western side is bordered by Lake Vembanad and is crossed over by different estuaries of River Muvattupuzha. Vaikom is the oldest township in the district of Kottayam and among the oldest in the south of India.
Vaikom is governed by a Municipality and is a Munsiff’s court seat, established under the Kingdom of Travancore. Vaikom is known for the Thekkan Kashi, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva where Vaikom Ashtami is observed during November.
Vaikom is located 36.5 kilometres from Kochi, the nearest city. The city can be reached via the SH 15. The Kochi Airport is 59.5 kilometres from here via the same route.
