Tiruvallur is situated on the banks of the Cooum River, 42 kilometres north-west of Chennai. The word "Tiruvallur" is derived from the Tamil sentence "tiru evvull" meaning, a place where the god, Veera Raghavar asked a saint for a place to sleep for a night. The famous Veera Raghavar Temple is also located in the area and is one of the 108 sacred shrines of Vaishnavites.
